An alternative version of the discography, listed by Label. The contents of each disc are listed, along with brief comments on recommended CDs.  Recommendation is dependent on performance and recording quality and also takes into account rival recordings. Luckily, few genuinely poor performances have been committed to disc. Those which are worth avoiding I have noted, with reasons given. Discs with no comment are good performances, well recorded, but up against stiff competition. Links are to sites where you should be able to purchase the more difficult to find CDs. I'll check for broken links as frequently as is practical, but cannot guarantee 100% accuracy. See also the listing of recordings available from the Estonian download-only site Muusika24.

12 Tónar 12 Ķsafold: All Sounds to Silence Come [2008 - SACD]
Ķsafold kammersveit/Danķel Bjarnason
Fratres version for chamber orchestra
Premiere recording of the version for chamber orchestra. Excellent performance from this young Icelandic ensemble and the recording quality and programme make this essential. Highly recommended.

ABC Classics 476 3180 Genevieve Lacey: Weaver of Fictions [2008]
Genevieve Lacey
Pari Intervallo version for 4 recorders
Pari Intervallo seems strangely out-of-place in this interesting programme of contemporary works for recorders. Worth a listen nonetheless.
Absolute Medien 967 Sehnsucht Berlin, a film by Peter Zach [2010 - Region "0" DVD Video]
Kaspar Timofej Kröner/Anne-Laure Aartin/Ulrich Mertin/Arvo Pärt
Es sang vor langen Jahren
Für Alina

Facinating film of "The City Named Desire" seen through the eyes of artists who live, have lived, or have passed through Berlin. Es sang... is from a live performance, Für Alina is played by Pärt himself. The Pärts talk of their time in the city. Recommended, though more for the film itself than the performances.
Absolute Music TS3006 Absolute Music: Reflecting Strings [2001]
Absolute Music - Moya O'Grady/Geraldine O'Doherty/David O'Doherty
Fratres arr. for violin & harp by Absolute Music
Spiegel im spiegel arr. for cello & harp by Absolute Music
The piano part of Fratres doesn't transfer well to harp, lacking the necessary dynamics and sounding strangely monotonic in places. Spirited playing, if a little rough around the edges.

Academy Story Line #1445 Rachel River [1992 - NTSC VHS tape]
artists unknown
Rachel River (1989 US film with original music by Arvo Pärt)
One of the very few films to feature original music by Pärt. No genuinely new music, but arrangements of well known compositions such as Fratres. Unfortunately, the soundtrack has reproduced very poorly on the tape. There has been no DVD release. Of interest only to the enthusiast.

Albany TROY603 The Ciompi Quartet: Melancholie [2003]

Only recording available of this version so of interest to the enthusiast. Otherwise, a surprisingly lack-lustre performance.

Analekta AN28726 Angčle Dubeau & La Pietą: Un Conte de Fées
Angčle Dubeau/Louise-Andrée Baril
Spiegel im spiegel version for violin and piano
Generally competent playing by both musicians, but surely one of the musicians, or the team of three producers and two engineers, should have spotted the very obvious howler from the piano in bar 65?

Analekta AN28731 Angčle Dubeau & La Pietą: Arvo Pärt - Portrait
Angčle Dubeau/La Pietą
Summa (version for string orchestra)
Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten (revised version)
Tabula Rasa (version for two violins)
Ein Wallfahrtslied (version for male-voice choir and string orchestra)
Mozart Adagio
Spiegel im spiegel
(version for violin and piano)
Generally well-played and a nicely focused recording, but there are a few too many annoyances (the prepared piano in Tabula rasa could have been better prepared for example) and there's a general air of blandness. The recording of Spiegel im spiegel comes from Analekta AN28726 and the note for that (see above) still stands!

Animato ACD6081 Quartetto con Affetto: Spektren [2004]
Quartetto con Affetto
Pari Intervallo (version for 4 recorders)
Brief though it is, Pari intervallo fits beautifully into this well-presented programme of mostly 14th and 15th century music for recorder quartet and percussion. Recommended

ARC Music EUCD1603 Jason Carter: Evocativa [2000]
Steve Morris/Jason Carter
Spiegel Im Spiegel (version for violin and guitar, arr. Jason Carter)
Although Pärt himself has made arrangements of many of his own pieces, it has to be done with care. Many examples transcribed by others, of which this is one, lose too many of the qualities of the original.

Passio (St. John Passion)
Originally made for C4 television in the UK in 1988, Paul Hillier and The Hilliard Ensemble captured at the peak of their working relationship with Pärt. For Hillier, Passio is still the finest example of Pärt's tintinnabuli style. Essential.

Three pieces from the mid-sixties partnered with Tabula rasa, one of the first major tintinnabuli works. It should be interesting but somehow the performances don't come together. It's not bad, just not very good.

Psalom (version for string quartet)
Of the two recordings available of Psalom in the version for string quartet, the Arditti Quartet have the performance edge over the Kronos Quartet (on Nonesuch). The recording may be a bit grainier here but it matches the performance well, where Kronos can sound too smooth. Recommended.

BBC Radio Classics BBCRD9129 Music by Bridge, Britten and Pärt [1995]
BBC Symphony Orchestra/Gennadi Rozhdestvensky
Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten (original version, UK premiere - recorded 1979)
An interesting disc as it includes the only available recording of the original version of the Cantus. The differences are small however, so this is not an essential purchase other than for the enthusiast.

BBC Radio Classics 15656 91962 Alfred Schnittke: Symphony no.2 [1997]
BBC Symphony Orchestra/Gennadi Rozhdestvensky
Pas de quatre
This is one for the dedicated only. Pärt seems to have had little real involvement in the composition of this collaboration with Alfred Schnittke, Edison Denisov and Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. He contributed only a theme for the third part (orchestrated by Rozhdestvensky), lifted from his own Wenn Bach Bienen Gezüchtet Hätte. Of interest only to the enthusiast.

Something of an interesting gestation period for this disc, partly recorded in 2000 for ECM Records but not released until 2004 on BIS. Excellent performances but, controversially, Kaljuste races through I am the true vine in half the time of any alternative recording. Recommended.

BIS CD1208 Håkan Hardenberger/Neeme Järvi: Trumpet Concertos by Martinsson, Pärt & Tamberg [2002]
Håkan Hardenberger/Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra/Neeme Järvi

Adapted from the version for violin and piano. Well played, but guitar doesn't have the dynamic range of the piano, and so the central section sounds rather subdued. CD also includes a remix version (Notes on Fratres) of the recording by Staffan Mossenmark and Jesper Norda. Worth a listen.

Overall, a reasonable performance of Spiegel... by Ivan Ženatż, but the piano accompaniment, while rhythmically sound, is all over the place, with numerous obviously wrong notes and, giving Bod'ovį the benefit of the doubt, an out of tune piano. How nobody noticed is beyond me.

Transcriptions for guitar of the three tintinnabuli piano pieces. Für Anna Maria works particularly well and the Variations are well-paced for the instrument (slightly faster than is usual for piano). I feel that Für Alina doesn't transfer well to the guitar, lacking the overtones provided by the piano but, as the rest of the programme is equally interesting, this album is worth checking out. Recommended. (Entry amended 14 May 2012)

Tabula Rasa
The CD that started it all off. This was the first recording released outside Estonia and the Soviet Bloc and immediately brought Pärt's music to a much wider audience. The recordings of Tabula rasa (taken from a German radio broadcast) and Gidon Kremer & Keith Jarrett's reading of Fratres are definitive. The Cantus is taken rather quicker than most recordings which, for me, robs it of some of its intensity. All in all though, an essential purchase. Essential.

F-Seitse OÜ (no catalogue number) Arvo Pärt: 24 Preludes for A Fugue [2002 - PAL format VHS video]
(86 minute documentary film)

In individual chapters (preludes) the film draws a fascinating portrait of Pärt. He is seen visiting his homeland for the first time in 13 years; walking with his wife; at rehearsals and performances in Germany, Italy and Estonia. Pärt reminisces about his life and talks about his work, explains how he discovered the “tintinnabuli style” and we hear excerpts from various pieces for string orchestra, voice and organ, including Orient & Occident, Cecilia, vergine romana , Como anhela la cierva and Für Alina. Absolutely essential viewing, and now available on DVD as "Arvo Pärt: 24 Preludes for A Fugue" - Ideale Audience 899132000091.

While slow readings of Pärt works are not uncommon, Pedroni's two performances of the Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinushka are painfully laboured, played at a simliar pace to Für Alina, which I'm sure was not the composer's intention. Come to that, Für Alina is also too slow.

Bruno Lukk
Sonatina, op1. no.1
Only the second commercial recording of Pärt's music. Pärt studied under Lukk in Tallinn in the late 1950s and the Sonatina is dedicated to him. The original EP is virtually impossible to find, but the recording of the Sonatina was released in 2009 on the CD "Bruno Lukk: Eesti Klaverimuusika", Eesti Klaveriõpetajate Ühing. Recommended

Childrens Choir of Tallinn Pioneers' Palace/Estonian RSO/Roman Matsov
Meie aed (Our Garden)
This was the first of two Melodiya recordings made of Meie aed. The performance of the choir on this disc is not to as high a standard as the 1965 recording, and Matsov's conducting seems rather frantic. The disc is virtually impossible to find.

Meie aed (Our Garden)
Second and superior of the two Melodiya recordings made of Meie aed. The choir consistently sings better and Jessipov's conducting is less hurried. Again, the disc is virtually impossible to find. Recommended.

Premičre recordings for all these pieces (those of the symphony and Perpetuum Mobile were first released in 1966) and performances by top Estonian orchestras and conductors make this a must have LP, even if it is extremely difficult to find. The historic sound quality detracts not a bit from equally historic performances. Musica Sillabica is otherwise unavailable. Essential.

Fratres (version for electronics, arr. William Orbit)
Deleted from the catalogue within days of its release because of copyright issues and now virtually impossible to find, the CD was re-released several years later but without the two Pärt pieces. The arrangements are interesting, Fratres being much in the spirit of the original, Cantus radically altered, but the CD can only be recommended to enthusiastic collectors and lovers of contemporary electronic popular music. Für Alina
Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinushka
There has been a tendency recently, mistakenly to my ears, for pianists to perform the Variations with the same degree of introspection required for Für Alina. The piece sounds extremely lethargic when the duration is stretched from a more typical 4 minutes to the near 9 of Levingston.

6 versions of Fratres, one of Pärt's most popular compositions and three other favourites for string orchestra. There is more than sufficient contrast in the different arrangements of Fratres to maintain interest throughout the disc, helped by sympathetic performances and excellent recordings. Tabula Rasa
(excerpt - Silentium)
Sloppy, exploitative, full-price compilation of recordings from earlier EMI and Virgin releases, many of which were originally mid or budget priced. Omitting half of Tabula rasa is nothing less than bizarre. Sleeve notes should be far more comprehensive and authoritative and the UK version of the sleeve gives the wrong year for Pärt's date of birth. AVOID! (The CD is now available at budget price (January 2005), but I STILL advise you to look for other releases with similar programmes).

Useful new recordings of the rarely heard Silouans Song and Trisagion partnered by some of the better known compositions for string orchestra. Tabula Rasa
(excerpt - Silentium)
Difficult to know how to rate this 2-CD compilation set.
A repackaging of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir's 1997 "Beatus" release, along with the 1998 compilation album "Sanctuary". I complained bitterly about Sanctuary on it's original, full-price release as it took tracks from various EMI Group CDs, some of which were previously, and still are, available on budget and super-budget labels. Also, the first movement of Tabula rasa was missing. Sadly, EMI have only corrected one of these two travesties - the CD is at least budget-priced, but still no complete Tabula rasa, even though there is plenty space on the disc. All-in-all, another example of crass repacking from the EMI stable, but at least it's at budget price this time. Tentatively recommended for the "Beatus" disc.

Unexpected Polish DVD release (under the title Byle Zapomnieć)of this difficult to find film. Complete with the original English language Dolby 5.1 soundtrack and optional Polish language voice-over and sub-titles. Worth checking out as the arrangement of Trisagion was made specially for the film, and also featured is music from the unreleased ECM recording session of Arvo on electronic keyboard and Jan Garbarek on sax.
